Shared Leadership
The president possess much power as a single man. He has the power to be commander in chief, create executive orders, and even edit bills as he wants. But the ability to edit bills or completely disregard them is something not a lot of people realize the president can do. This is because that power falls under the Signing Statement. The signing statement is a comment add by the president after signing the bill. It can be in support of the bill or be against certain parts of that bill. It gives the president power to be able to make small changes to bills as he sees fit.
In the article " A slip of the pen" this person criticizes the reports given about the questionably of the president's signing statement. They claim that it is a fair part of out checks and balances put in place in our system. That through this small loophole, the president does not have to do anything he sees as unconstitutional. Also stating that the singing statement receives much support from the judicial branch. "There is, moreover, significant judicial approval of the practice-". This person insists that rather than question the presidents ability to use this signing statement, we should question his constitutional views of right and wrong. This article states that Bush, and many other presidents have used the power of the signing statement to amend and change laws to how they see fit. This being done without any supervision from congress or restrictions. "For Mr. Bush, they are far more: part of a strategy to expand presidential powers at the expense of Congress and the courts. His signing statements have become notices to Congress that he simply does not intend to follow the law, especially any attempt to hold him accountable for his actions". This talks about how it can also show the president's opinion on the law if it gets challenged later on. However, it mostly highlights that the president can alter any laws passed by his simple signing statement. It is like a form of a very subtle executive order.
